How to Drill Out a Master Lock (As a Last Resort)
Losing the key to a padlock can be frustrating, but if you have no other way to open it, drilling is an effective last-resort option. This method will permanently destroy the lock, so it should only be performed on a lock that you own. Before you begin, make sure you have the right tools for the job.
What You'll Need:
- A power drill
- Drill bits (one small, one slightly larger than the keyhole)
- A center punch or sharp nail
- A hammer
- Pliers
- Safety glasses
Step-by-Step Guide:
- Safety First: Before you start, put on your safety glasses to protect your eyes from metal shavings.
- Create a Pilot Point: Use the hammer and center punch (or nail) to create a small indent in the very center of the keyhole. This will keep your drill bit from slipping.
- Drill a Pilot Hole: Using a small drill bit, carefully drill a hole through the center of the keyhole, following your pilot point.
- Destroy the Pins: Switch to a drill bit that is roughly the same size as the keyhole. Insert it into your pilot hole and drill again. You should feel the internal pins breaking as you drill deeper into the lock mechanism.
- Open the Lock: Once the pins are destroyed, the lock should be able to be forced open. You may need to use pliers or a screwdriver to manipulate the shackle.
Drilling a lock is a straightforward process, but it requires care and the right tools. Remember, this will destroy the lock, so only use this method when you have no other choice and the lock belongs to you.
