A Landscaper's Guide to Stormwater Management

Stormwater runoff—rainfall that flows over the land instead of soaking into the soil—can cause significant environmental issues like erosion, flooding, and water pollution. As a landscaper, you can implement several effective strategies to manage this runoff, protecting local ecosystems while adding value to the properties you service.

Here are four key strategies for professional stormwater management:

  • Stormwater Detention Basins

These basins are designed to temporarily collect and store water during heavy rainfall. This process slows the release of water, which reduces peak flows, prevents flooding, and allows pollutants like sediment and oil to settle out before they can enter nearby waterways.

  • Vegetated Swales

Swales are shallow, wide channels lined with vegetation like grasses or shrubs. They are designed to capture, slow, and filter stormwater runoff. The vegetation helps remove pollutants and allows water to gradually soak into the ground, making swales an excellent way to direct water away from buildings and hardscapes.

  • Retention Ponds

Unlike detention basins which are typically dry, retention ponds are designed to hold a permanent pool of water. They are highly effective at managing runoff and filtering pollutants, and they can also be designed as an attractive water feature that enhances the landscape's aesthetic.

  • Green Roofs

A green roof is a roof that is partially or completely covered with a growing medium and vegetation. These systems are designed to absorb and store rainwater directly at the source, significantly reducing runoff. They also provide secondary benefits like improved air quality, building insulation, and wildlife habitat.

By implementing these strategies, landscapers can play a vital role in creating beautiful, functional, and environmentally responsible outdoor spaces.
