Strom Sprayer DIY Troubleshooting Guide

At Green Touch Industries and TrailerRacks.com, we know how important your Strom Backpack Sprayer is for getting your jobs done efficiently. When it's not working as expected, it can be frustrating. But don't worry! Many common issues can be resolved with a few simple checks and fixes.

Safety First – Always!

Before you start tinkering, please remember:

  • Empty the Tank: Ensure the sprayer is empty of all chemicals.
  • Rinse (If Possible): If you can, rinse the sprayer with clean water.
  • Power Off: Make sure the power switch is OFF and the battery is disconnected if you're working on electrical components.
  • Wear PPE: If there's any chance of chemical residue, wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Quick Maintenance Wins (Prevent Problems Before They Start!)

  • Clean After Use: Flush the tank, Hose (9006), Wand (9004), and nozzle with clean water after every use.
  • Charge Smart: Keep your Battery (9012) charged, but don't leave it on the Charger (9013) indefinitely after it's full (unless your charger model specifically allows this).
  • Filter Check: Regularly clean your Lid Filter (9009).

Troubleshooting Your Strom Backpack Sprayer: Step-by-Step

Let's dive into common problems and how to diagnose them:

Problem 1: My Sprayer Won't Turn On At All (No Sound, No Power)

This is often battery or connection related.

Is the Battery (9012) Charged?

  • Check: Ensure your Battery (9012) is fully charged using your Charger (9013). Check the indicator lights on the charger.
  • Fix: If it's not charged, charge it fully. If it won't hold a charge or the charger shows an error, you might need a new Battery (9012) or Charger (9013).

Is the Battery (9012) Properly Connected?

  • Check: Make sure the battery is securely clicked into the sprayer. Check for any dirt or corrosion on the battery and sprayer terminals.
  • Fix: Clean terminals gently with a dry cloth or a soft brush if needed. Re-insert the battery firmly.

Check the Power Switch (9010):

  • Check: Does the switch feel normal when you flip it, or is it loose, stiff, or wobbly?
  • Fix: If the switch feels damaged, it might need replacing (Power Switch (9010)).

Internal Connections / Circuit Board (8006):

  • Check: If the battery, charger, and switch seem okay, there might be a loose internal wire or an issue with the Circuit Board (8006). (This is a more advanced check; contact us if unsure).
  • Fix: A faulty Circuit Board (8006) will need replacement.

Problem 2: The Sprayer Turns On (Pump Runs), But No Spray or Very Low Pressure

The pump is working, but the liquid isn't getting out properly.

***BEFORE YOU PROCEED WITH THIS STEP: DOES YOUR SPRAYER NEED TO BE PRIMED?***

Is There Liquid in the Tank?

  • Check: Seems obvious, but always worth a look!
  • Fix: Fill the tank.

Clogged Lid Filter (9009):

  • Check: Unscrew the Lid (9001) and check the Lid Filter (9009) underneath. Is it full of debris?
  • Fix: Remove and thoroughly clean the Lid Filter (9009). Replace it if it's damaged.

Clogged Nozzle (Adjustable Nozzle (8005) or Fan Tip (8001PW)):

  • Check: Unscrew the nozzle tip from your Spray Gun (9016) or Wand (9004). Look for blockages.
  • Fix: Clean the nozzle carefully with water and a soft brush or pin (be gentle not to enlarge the orifice). If persistently clogged or damaged, replace the Adjustable Nozzle (8005) or Fan Tip (8001PW).

Kinked or Blocked Hose (9006):

  • Check: Inspect the entire Hose (9006) for kinks, twists, or visible blockages. Ensure connections are tight.
  • Fix: Straighten kinks. If the hose is damaged, it needs replacing (Hose (9006)).

Air Lock in the System:

  • Check: Sometimes air gets trapped.
  • Fix: Try running the sprayer with the nozzle removed for a moment to help prime the Pump (9008).

Issue with Spray Gun (9016) or Wand (9004):

  • Check: There might be a blockage inside these components.
  • Fix: Try to flush them. If the internal valve in the Spray Gun (9016) is stuck or damaged, you might need a new Spray Gun (9016) or Wand (9004).

Worn or Damaged Pump (9008):

  • Check: If everything else is clear and the pump sounds strained or weak, it might be the issue.
  • Fix: The Pump (9008) may need replacement.

Problem 3: My Sprayer is Leaking!

Leaks can happen at various points. Pinpoint the source:

Loose Connections:

  • Check: Where the Hose (9006) connects to the Pump (9008) and Spray Gun (9016), where the Wand (9004) connects to the gun, or where the nozzle attaches.
  • Fix: Tighten these connections. If they still leak, an O-ring or seal might be damaged. Often, replacing the component (e.g., Hose (9006), Spray Gun (9016)) is the easiest fix as new seals are included.

Cracked/Damaged Hose (9006):

  • Fix: Replace the Hose (9006).

Leaking Lid (9001):

  • Check: Is the Lid (9001) on straight and tight? Is the seal clean and intact?
  • Fix: Clean the seal. If the Lid (9001) is cracked, replace it.

Crack in Wand (9004) or Spray Gun (9016) Body:

  • Fix: Replace the damaged Wand (9004) or Spray Gun (9016).

Leak from the Pump (9008) Unit:

  • Fix: This usually means internal seals in the Pump (9008) have failed. The Pump (9008) will likely need replacement.

Problem 4: Battery (9012) Isn't Holding a Charge or Charging Properly

Age of Battery (9012):

  • Check: Batteries have a lifespan. If it's old and seen many charge cycles, it might be time.
  • Fix: Replace the Battery (9012).

Faulty Charger (9013):

  • Check: Are the lights on the Battery (9012) behaving as expected? Is it plugged into a working outlet?
  • Fix: If the Charger (9013) seems dead or isn't charging the battery, it may need replacement.

Dirty Terminals:

  • Check: Look for corrosion on the Battery (9012) terminals and the charger contacts.
  • Fix: Clean gently with a dry cloth or contact cleaner.

Problem 5: Erratic Spray Pattern or Pulsating Spray

Partially Clogged Nozzle (Adjustable Nozzle (8005) or Fan Tip (8001PW)):

  • Fix: Even a tiny piece of debris can affect the pattern. Clean thoroughly or replace the Adjustable Nozzle (8005) or Fan Tip (8001PW).

Debris in the Line, Spray Gun (9016), or Wand (9004):

  • Fix: Flush the entire system. Clean the Spray Gun (9016) and Wand (9004).

Worn Pump (9008) Internals:

  • Fix: If cleaning doesn't help, the Pump (9008) internals might be worn, causing inconsistent pressure. The Pump (9008) may need replacement.

Problem 6: Obvious Physical Damage

Sometimes, things just break. We have the parts you need:

  • Broken Straps (9007): Get a new set for comfortable carrying.
  • Cracked Lid (9001): A new Lid (9001) will ensure a good seal.
  • Broken Spray Gun Holster (9003): Keep your gun secure with a replacement.
  • Bent/Broken Wand (9004): A straight Wand (9004) is key for accurate spraying.
